Look up a Kentucky company
Kentucky only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.
What the Kentucky business search shows
The Kentucky Secretary of State business search finds a company by business name, organization number, or city or ZIP code of the principal office. A Kentucky business profile identifies the company by its Organization Number, with no EIN field, and the office's FAQ says it does not issue or maintain records of FEINs.
The Kentucky organization number
The Kentucky Secretary of State gives every company an organization number when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.
Check if a Kentucky LLC is active
Search the company in the Kentucky business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.
To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Existence from the Kentucky Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.
Good to know in Kentucky
- Kentucky levies a Limited Liability Entity Tax on every LLC, including single-member LLCs that are disregarded for federal purposes. Those file Form 725 with the Department of Revenue even though they file no separate federal return, which surprises owners who chose a disregarded LLC precisely to avoid a business-level return.
- Kentucky's annual report deadline is June 30 for every LLC regardless of when it was formed, and the Secretary of State begins administrative dissolution of companies that miss it in the autumn. The report is filed by organization number, not by EIN.
- Kentucky's Department of Revenue registration, Form 10A100 or New Business Registration in MyTaxes, is a single application that opens sales and use tax, withholding and the LLET account together. The form itself says it does not cover unemployment insurance, which is a separate registration with the Office of Unemployment Insurance.
