Which states this checks

Florida, Texas, Connecticut, Colorado, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania are checked here, from public state data. Each answer says what that state’s data covers. For the other states, we open the state’s own search.

How to read the answer

A match means the name is on file, so pick another or ask the state. Names that start the same way may still be too close, because each state sets its own rules for what counts as different. If nothing matches, file soon, since a name is not yours until the state accepts your filing.

Questions

How do I check if an LLC name is available?

Search your state's business records for the name, then read that state's naming rules. This tool checks seven states' data directly and opens the official search for the others. The state makes the final decision when you file.

Does no match mean I can use the name?

No. It is a good sign, but the state can still refuse a name that is too similar to one on file, and our data may not include every record. Inactive companies can also hold on to a name for a time in some states.

Does LLC at the end make a name different?

Generally no. States usually ignore endings such as LLC or Inc when comparing names, so this check ignores them too.

Can I reserve a name?

Many states let you reserve a name for a fee and a set period. Check your state's filing office for the form and the cost.

Is checking a state name the same as a trademark search?

No. A state record only shows names registered in that state. Someone else may still hold trademark rights in the name, so search the USPTO database too.
