Ohio EIN Number: OH|TAX Accounts, Vendor's License, RITA

Last updated November 1, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

There is no Ohio EIN. The IRS issues it on Form SS-4. What Ohio adds comes after it: an employer withholding account number from the Ohio Department of Taxation once you pay wages, an unemployment insurance account with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and a vendor's license from the Ohio Department of Taxation if you sell taxable goods or services.

Ohio Department of Taxation accounts, employer withholding and the vendor's license among them, are opened in OH|TAX eServices, which you reach from the Ohio Business Gateway dashboard under Register a new business tax account. Unemployment is separate, with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services in The SOURCE.

Ohio school district income tax is withheld under the same account number the employer uses for Ohio employer withholding. Employers withhold it for employees who live in a school district whose voters have approved the tax, so it follows where the employee lives, not where the business is.

Ohio cities and villages can levy their own income tax, which employers withhold for each city or village where employees work. The Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA) collects it for nearly 400 of them, and businesses register with RITA directly, apart from the state withholding account.

Also on the Ohio list

  • Register with the Ohio Department of Taxation through the Ohio Business Gateway. The EIN is required to open the account.
  • Register for employer withholding through the same Gateway before your first payroll.

What is different about Ohio

  • Ohio routes essentially all state tax registration through one portal, the Ohio Business Gateway, rather than separate agency sign-ups. You will be asked for the EIN there, which is why Ohio owners usually need the EIN before they can finish setting the business up.
  • Ohio levies a Commercial Activity Tax on gross receipts rather than a traditional corporate income tax, so an Ohio LLC's state obligation does not track the federal tax classification the way it does in most states.
  • Ohio does not require LLCs to file an annual or biennial report with the Secretary of State, which is unusual; most states do.

Before you apply

The SS-4 must match the Ohio Secretary of State filing; its charter or registration number (for example 202613306464) is a state index, not a tax ID.

Ohio EIN questions

How do I get an EIN number in Ohio?

File IRS Form SS-4 after the Ohio Secretary of State approves any formation filing; there is no Ohio EIN application.

Is the Ohio employer withholding account number the same as my EIN?

No. The Ohio Department of Taxation assigns it when you register as an employer in OH|TAX eServices. It goes in W-2 box 15; the EIN goes in box b.

Where do I register for Ohio unemployment insurance?

With the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, online through The SOURCE. The account is separate from the federal EIN, which the registration asks for.

Do I need an Ohio vendor's license?

Only if you sell what Ohio taxes. The Ohio Department of Taxation issues it through OH|TAX eServices, and your returns are filed under its number, not the EIN.

Is there an Ohio EIN or Ohio tax ID number?

No. The EIN is federal and comes from the IRS. Ohio's own numbers are the charter or registration number on your Secretary of State filing and the account numbers the Department of Taxation assigns when you register through the Ohio Business Gateway, such as a withholding account, a vendor's license for sales tax, or a Commercial Activity Tax account. The Gateway asks for the federal EIN first.

Does an Ohio LLC have to file an annual report?

No. Ohio is one of the few states that does not require LLCs to file an annual or biennial report with the Secretary of State. That does not mean nothing is due: the state tax accounts opened through the Ohio Business Gateway, such as withholding, sales tax and the Commercial Activity Tax, each carry their own returns, all under the EIN.
