How to Apply for an EIN in Colorado
Last updated August 29, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team
The EIN step itself
One federal form, one agency, the same options wherever the business sits: online, fax, mail, or the international phone line. The method decides the timeline, not the state. Every method and what it actually takes covers that in full, and it applies to Colorado unchanged.
What Colorado needs first
Form your entity with the Colorado Secretary of State before applying. The IRS asks for the legal name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, and a mismatch is one of the common causes of a rejected application.
Colorado issues a Colorado entity ID. It identifies your company in state records and is not a tax ID. It cannot be used where an EIN is asked for, and the IRS has no record of it.
What Colorado requires once you have the EIN
- Register with the Colorado Department of Revenue through MyBizColorado for sales tax and wage withholding — the EIN is required on the registration.
- File the Periodic Report with the Secretary of State every year, inside the filing window around the anniversary month of formation.
What is actually different about Colorado
- Colorado business filings are online only. There is no paper Articles of Organization to mail, which is unusual, and it means the state record exists the moment the filing is accepted rather than after a clerk processes it.
- Colorado calls its yearly filing a Periodic Report and opens a window around the anniversary month for it rather than fixing one statewide date. Missing the window puts the company into noncompliant status, which is a state problem the EIN does not touch.
- The Secretary of State issues an eleven-digit Colorado entity ID that begins with the filing year. It is how the state indexes the company and it is not a tax number of any kind.
