Starting a job, or want to change how much tax comes out of your pay? Complete Step 1, and Steps 2 to 4 only if they apply to you. We work out Step 3 from the number of children and other dependents you enter.
Before you hand it in
Sign and date Step 5. The employer section at the bottom is for your employer to complete. If you have more than one job, read Step 2 on the form, which explains how to split your withholding.
Questions
Do I send my W-4 to the IRS?
No. Give it to your employer. They use it to work out how much federal income tax to withhold from your pay.
Which steps do I have to fill in?
Step 1, and you sign Step 5. Steps 2, 3 and 4 are only for people they apply to, and leaving them blank is common.
How is Step 3 worked out?
The 2026 form multiplies qualifying children under 17 by $2,200 and other dependents by $500, then adds any other credits. This tool does the same sum. It only applies if your income is within the form's limits.
What if I do not give my employer a W-4?
Your employer generally withholds as if you were single with no other adjustments, which may take out more or less than you need.
Is my Social Security number safe here?
The form is filled in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us or saved. You can also leave the number blank and add it to the PDF.
