How to Apply for an EIN in Kentucky

Last updated September 6, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

The EIN application is federal and identical in every state. There is no Kentucky EIN, no Kentucky form, and no Kentucky office involved: you file IRS Form SS-4 and the IRS issues the number. What is genuinely different in Kentucky is what happens on either side of it — the Kentucky Secretary of State filing that has to exist first, and the state registrations that need the EIN once you have it.

Get the EIN for your Kentucky business

Pick your entity type and we take it from there: our specialists prepare the SS-4 with the name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, file it, and email you the EIN, typically within 2 to 4 business days (7 to 10 if it has to go by fax).

The EIN step itself

One federal form, one agency, the same options wherever the business sits: online, fax, mail, or the international phone line. The method decides the timeline, not the state. Every method and what it actually takes covers that in full, and it applies to Kentucky unchanged.

What Kentucky needs first

Form your entity with the Kentucky Secretary of State before applying. The IRS asks for the legal name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, and a mismatch is one of the common causes of a rejected application.

Kentucky assigns its own organization number. It identifies your company in state records and is not a tax ID. It cannot be used where an EIN is asked for, and the IRS has no record of it.

What Kentucky requires once you have the EIN

  • Register with the Kentucky Department of Revenue through the Kentucky One Stop Business Portal for the tax accounts the business needs; the EIN is required to open them.
  • File the LLC annual report with the Secretary of State between January 1 and June 30 every year, starting the calendar year after formation.

What is actually different about Kentucky

  • Kentucky levies a Limited Liability Entity Tax on every LLC, including single-member LLCs that are disregarded for federal purposes. Those file Form 725 with the Department of Revenue even though they file no separate federal return, which surprises owners who chose a disregarded LLC precisely to avoid a business-level return.
  • Kentucky's annual report deadline is June 30 for every LLC regardless of when it was formed, and the Secretary of State begins administrative dissolution of companies that miss it in the autumn. The report is filed by organization number, not by EIN.
  • Kentucky routes state tax registration through the One Stop Business Portal, a single application that opens sales and use tax, withholding and the LLET account together, rather than separate registrations with separate agencies.
