Questions

Who gets a Form 1099-NEC?

Generally anyone you paid $2,000 or more in 2026 for services in your business who is not your employee, such as a contractor or freelancer. For payments before 2026 the amount was $600. Corporations are usually exempt.

Can I print Copy A and mail it to the IRS?

No. The Copy A on the IRS website is for information only. File Copy A electronically, for example through the IRS's IRIS system, or on the official red scannable form.

When is the 1099-NEC due?

Generally by January 31, to both the recipient and the IRS. When that falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day.

Where do I get the recipient's TIN?

Ask them for a Form W-9 before you pay. You can leave the number blank here and add it to the PDF.

Is what I type here saved?

No. The form is filled in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us or saved.

Before you pay a contractor

Get their W-9 first. If you will file 1099s for your business, you need your own EIN for the payer box.
