Questions

What is Form W-7 for?

It is the application for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN. The IRS issues ITINs to people who need a U.S. tax number but cannot get a Social Security number.

Where do I send Form W-7?

In most cases you attach it to the front of your federal tax return and mail both, with your identity documents, to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, Texas. The W-7 instructions give the address and the exceptions.

Do I have to mail my passport?

The IRS needs original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. You can also apply in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center by appointment, or through an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent, which can check your documents and return them.

Do I need an ITIN to get an EIN for my company?

No. An owner without an SSN or ITIN can still get an EIN for a company, by fax or by mail instead of online. See our guide to getting an EIN without an SSN.

Is what I type here saved?

No. The form is filled in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us or saved.

Starting a business without an SSN?

You can get an EIN without an ITIN. See how to get an EIN without an SSN and using an ITIN for an EIN.
