How to Apply for an EIN in Georgia

The EIN step itself
One federal form, one agency, the same options wherever the business sits: online, fax, mail, or the international phone line. The method decides the timeline, not the state. Every method and what it actually takes covers that in full, and it applies to Georgia unchanged.
What Georgia needs first
Form your entity with the Georgia Secretary of State, Corporations Division before applying. The IRS asks for the legal name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, and a mismatch is one of the common causes of a rejected application.
Georgia issues a control number. It identifies your company in state records and is not a tax ID. It cannot be used where an EIN is asked for, and the IRS has no record of it.
What Georgia requires once you have the EIN
- Register with the Georgia Department of Revenue through the Georgia Tax Center — the EIN is required to open sales tax and withholding accounts.
- File your annual registration with the Secretary of State; Georgia requires it every year the company exists, not only after a change.
What is actually different about Georgia
- Georgia calls its yearly filing an annual registration rather than an annual report, and it is due at the start of April each year. Letting it lapse puts the company into administrative dissolution, which is a problem the EIN cannot fix.
- The Corporations Division issues a control number that identifies the company in Georgia records. Banks occasionally ask for it alongside the EIN, and the two are unrelated — the control number is a state index, the EIN is federal.
- Georgia routes state tax registration through the Georgia Tax Center, which asks for the EIN up front, so the federal number has to exist before the state accounts can be opened.
