How to Apply for an EIN in Michigan
Last updated August 29, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team
The EIN step itself
One federal form, one agency, the same options wherever the business sits: online, fax, mail, or the international phone line. The method decides the timeline, not the state. Every method and what it actually takes covers that in full, and it applies to Michigan unchanged.
What Michigan needs first
Form your entity with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Corporations Division before applying. The IRS asks for the legal name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, and a mismatch is one of the common causes of a rejected application.
Michigan issues a customer ID number. It identifies your company in state records and is not a tax ID. It cannot be used where an EIN is asked for, and the IRS has no record of it.
What Michigan requires once you have the EIN
- Register with the Michigan Department of Treasury through Michigan Treasury Online for sales, use and withholding — the EIN is required to register.
- File your annual statement with LARA by the middle of February each year after formation.
What is actually different about Michigan
- Michigan does not run business filings through its Secretary of State. They sit with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, which is why searches for a Michigan Secretary of State business lookup lead to the wrong agency and why the paperwork arrives under a name owners do not recognise.
- Michigan sets one fixed annual statement date in February for every LLC rather than an anniversary date, so a company formed in December files its first statement within weeks of forming.
- LARA issues a customer ID number for the entity, which is the number Michigan uses to index the company. It is not a tax ID and Treasury will still ask for the federal EIN separately.
