How to Apply for an EIN in Iowa

Last updated September 22, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

The EIN application is federal and identical in every state. There is no Iowa EIN, no Iowa form, and no Iowa office involved: you file IRS Form SS-4 and the IRS issues the number. What is genuinely different in Iowa is what happens on either side of it — the Iowa Secretary of State filing that has to exist first, and the state registrations that need the EIN once you have it.

Get the EIN for your Iowa business

Pick your entity type and we take it from there: our specialists prepare the SS-4 with the name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, file it, and email you the EIN, typically within 2 to 4 business days (7 to 10 if it has to go by fax).

The EIN step itself

One federal form, one agency, the same options wherever the business sits: online, fax, mail, or the international phone line. The method decides the timeline, not the state. Every method and what it actually takes covers that in full, and it applies to Iowa unchanged.

What Iowa needs first

Form your entity with the Iowa Secretary of State before applying. The IRS asks for the legal name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, and a mismatch is one of the common causes of a rejected application.

Iowa assigns its own business number. It identifies your company in state records and is not a tax ID. It cannot be used where an EIN is asked for, and the IRS has no record of it.

What Iowa requires once you have the EIN

  • Register with the Iowa Department of Revenue through GovConnectIowa, which asks for the FEIN before the application starts and issues a separate permit number for each tax the business needs, such as sales and use tax or withholding. Once issued, a permit stays in effect until the owner cancels it or the department revokes it; there is no renewal.
  • File the biennial report with the Secretary of State through Fast Track Filing between January 1 and April 1 of each odd-numbered year, starting with the first odd-numbered year after the year the LLC was formed.

What is actually different about Iowa

  • Iowa splits its biennial reports by entity type: LLCs file in odd-numbered years and for-profit corporations in even-numbered years, in both cases between January 1 and April 1. An LLC formed in 2026 files its first report in 2027, while one formed in 2027 does not file until 2029.
  • The Iowa Department of Revenue gives every taxpayer an IDR ID, which the department describes as generated by the department, unlike an SSN or FEIN. Registration letters list the IDR ID alongside the account or permit number for each tax, so an Iowa LLC ends up with an EIN, an IDR ID and one or more permit numbers, each used in different places.
  • Iowa sales tax reaches services only when Iowa law lists them, but the list is long: lawn care and landscaping, pet grooming, non-residential janitorial work, vehicle repair, barber and beauty services and photography are all on it. Many Iowa service LLCs therefore need a sales tax permit even though they sell no goods.
