Look up a Virginia company

Search Virginia records

Virginia only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.

What the Virginia business search shows

The Virginia SCC Clerk's Information System finds a company by entity name, SCC ID, filing number, principal or registered agent. It finds a company by entity name, SCC ID, filing number, principal or registered agent. Use it to confirm a company exists and is active, not to get its federal number.

Virginia's sales tax dealer lookup is not public. By statute it runs through the online account of a registered dealer, and it returns dealer names and certificate of registration numbers, not EINs.

The SCC's FAQ says it cannot issue a tax ID or EIN.

The Virginia SCC entity ID

The Virginia State Corporation Commission (Clerk's Information System) gives every company an SCC entity ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if a Virginia LLC is active

Search the company in the Virginia business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Good Standing from the Virginia State Corporation Commission (Clerk's Information System) (for a corporation; an LLC gets a Certificate of Fact of Existence). Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Virginia

  • Virginia business filings sit with the State Corporation Commission, a regulatory body that also oversees utilities and insurers, rather than with the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Owners searching for a Virginia Secretary of State business lookup land on the wrong office.
  • Virginia LLCs do not file an annual report with the state. They pay an annual registration fee instead, due in the anniversary month, and the company can be cancelled for missing it. An EIN cannot bring a cancelled LLC back.
  • The Commission issues an SCC entity ID that indexes the company in the Clerk's Information System. It is a state record locator, not a tax number, and Virginia Tax will still ask for the federal EIN.

Questions

How do I search for a business in Virginia?

Use the Virginia SCC Clerk's Information System, which finds a company by entity name, SCC ID, filing number, principal or registered agent. Search by the main words of the name, without LLC or Inc, so small differences do not hide the company.

Does the Virginia business search show a company's EIN?

Generally not. The EIN comes from the IRS, and Virginia's business records are kept for the state's own purposes. A Form W-9 from the company is the reliable way to get it.

How do I check if a Virginia LLC is active?

Search the company by name and open its record. The status shows whether Virginia counts it as active. Words like dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, often because an annual filing or fee was missed.

How do I get proof that a Virginia company is in good standing?

Order a Certificate of Good Standing from the Virginia State Corporation Commission (Clerk's Information System) (for a corporation; an LLC gets a Certificate of Fact of Existence). Banks, lenders and other states ask for it as proof the company exists and is current.

What is a Virginia SCC entity ID?
