Look up a Rhode Island company
Rhode Island only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.
What the Rhode Island business search shows
The Rhode Island Department of State keeps Rhode Island’s record of companies formed or registered there. Use it to confirm a company’s exact legal name and whether it is active.
The Rhode Island identification number
The Rhode Island Department of State gives every company an identification number when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.
Check if a Rhode Island LLC is active
Search the company in the Rhode Island business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.
To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Good Standing from the Rhode Island Department of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.
Good to know in Rhode Island
- Rhode Island requires a single-member LLC to file its own state return, Form RI-1065, even though it files no separate federal return, and every LLC not taxed as a corporation owes an annual fee equal to the minimum tax imposed on a corporation. A calendar-year single-member LLC's RI-1065 is due by the 15th day of the fourth month after year end.
- The Rhode Island annual report window runs from February 1 to May 1, and the report asks for no financial or ownership information. The Department of State mails a courtesy reminder each January; if that letter comes back undeliverable, it starts revocation proceedings for failure to maintain a registered office.
- One BAR registration opens the Rhode Island unemployment insurance account together with temporary disability insurance (TDI) and the job development fund tax, alongside withholding and the retail sales permit. Sales permits expire every June 30, renewal applications are due by February 1 each year, and each business location needs its own permit.
