Look up a New Jersey company

Search New Jersey records

New Jersey only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.

What the New Jersey business search shows

The New Jersey business name search finds a company by business name, keyword or 10-digit entity ID. It finds a company by business name, keyword or 10-digit entity ID. Use it to confirm a company exists and is active, not to get its federal number.

New Jersey ties its state number directly to the federal one: the state says a business's New Jersey Tax ID is the same as its EIN plus a 3-digit suffix. If you hold a business's New Jersey Tax ID, the first nine digits are its EIN.

The New Jersey Entity ID

The New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services gives every company an Entity ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if a New Jersey LLC is active

Search the company in the New Jersey business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Standing Certificate from the New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in New Jersey

  • New Jersey splits formation into two filings with the same Division: the certificate of formation, which creates the LLC, and the business registration, NJ-REG, which registers it for taxes. The second one cannot be done without the federal EIN, and it is the one that issues the Business Registration Certificate contractors and public bodies ask for.
  • New Jersey assigns a ten-digit Entity ID at formation, printed on the filed certificate. Every later filing, including the annual report and the NJ-REG registration, asks for it, and it is the number owners most often cannot find when the first annual report comes due.
  • New Jersey's LLC annual report is due by the end of the anniversary month and can only be filed online. There is no paper form, so an owner waiting for a mailed notice with a form attached is waiting for something the state does not send.
