Look up a Nevada company
Nevada only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.
What the Nevada business search shows
The Nevada Secretary of State business entity search finds a company by entity name, entity number, NV Business ID, officer or registered agent. It finds a company by entity name, entity number, NV Business ID, officer or registered agent. Use it to confirm a company exists and is active, not to get its federal number.
Nevada is explicit about the limit: the Department says other taxpayer records stay confidential under NRS 360.255 without the Governor's approval or the taxpayer's signed authorization.
The Nevada entity number
The Nevada Secretary of State gives every company an entity number when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.
Check if a Nevada LLC is active
Search the company in the Nevada business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.
To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a certificate of good standing from the Nevada Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.
Good to know in Nevada
- Nevada formation is three filings at once: the articles of organization, the initial list of managers or managing members, and the state business license, all submitted together online with the Secretary of State, whose old SilverFlume address now leads to Nevada ORION. An LLC whose owner filed only the articles is not complete and will not show as active.
- Nevada's state business license is issued by the Secretary of State as part of the formation bundle, not by the Department of Taxation, and it renews annually with the list of managers. The Department of Taxation handles sales tax and the modified business tax on payroll separately, under the federal EIN.
- Nevada has no personal or corporate income tax, but it does have a commerce tax on Nevada gross revenue above a threshold and a modified business tax on wages. Both are registered and filed with the Department of Taxation, so a Nevada LLC with employees ends up with accounts at two state agencies plus the IRS.
