Look up a Kansas company

Search Kansas records

Kansas only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.

What the Kansas business search shows

The Kansas Secretary of State business entity search finds a company by business name, Kansas business ID or resident agent. It finds a company by business name, Kansas business ID or resident agent. Use it to confirm a company exists and is active, not to get its federal number.

The Kansas LLC annual report form has no FEIN field, and the Secretary of State says the business ID it assigns is not the FEIN.

The Kansas business entity ID

The Kansas Secretary of State gives every company a business entity ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if a Kansas LLC is active

Search the company in the Kansas business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Good Standing from the Kansas Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Kansas

  • Kansas replaced its annual report with a biennial information report on January 1, 2024. The reporting year follows the formation year: an LLC formed in an even-numbered year files in even-numbered years, and one formed in an odd-numbered year files in odd-numbered years. A company still unfiled three months after the due date forfeits and cannot file anything else with the Secretary of State until it catches up and is reinstated.
  • A Kansas LLC's information report must name each member who owns 5 percent or more of the capital, with an address where that member can regularly be found. The Secretary of State treats its filings as public record that may be viewable online, so the names of significant owners end up on the public record.
  • Kansas Secretary of State forms, from the information report to a change of resident agent, ask first for the business entity ID the Secretary of State issued and say in the instructions that it is not a tax ID number. The EIN, and any Department of Revenue registration number, do not belong in that box.
