Search Indiana records

Indiana only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.

What the Indiana business search shows

The INBiz business search finds a company by business name, business ID, filing number, registered agent or governing person. It finds a company by business name, business ID, filing number, registered agent or governing person. Use it to confirm a company exists and is active, not to get its federal number.

Indiana's own tax number is the Taxpayer Identification Number, or TID. A business with several locations under one federal number can consolidate under one TID. Separate entities with different FEINs cannot.

The state's FAQ describes search results by name, address, registered agent and status, and does not mention an EIN.

The Indiana business ID

The Indiana Secretary of State gives every company a business ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if an Indiana LLC is active

Search the company in the Indiana business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Existence from the Indiana Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Indiana

  • Indiana's Business Entity Report is biennial and is keyed to the month the LLC was formed, not a single statewide deadline. The report is past due after the end of that month in the reporting year, and the due date is shown on the company's record in the INBiz business search under its business ID.
  • The Indiana Department of Revenue identifies a business by its own ten-digit Taxpayer Identification Number, plus a three-digit location number for each location. Several locations under one EIN can be consolidated under one TID, but separate companies with separate EINs cannot share one, and a change that produces a new EIN requires a new state registration.
  • Indiana employers withhold county income tax as well as state income tax, at rates set for each of Indiana's 92 counties. Each employee's county is fixed as of January 1 on Form WH-4, the Employee's Withholding Exemption and County Status Certificate, and a move later in the year does not change it until the next calendar year.

Questions

How do I search for a business in Indiana?

How do I get proof that an Indiana company is in good standing?

What is an Indiana business ID?
