Look up a Utah company

Search Utah records

Utah only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.

What the Utah business search shows

The Utah business entity search finds a company by entity name, entity number, principal or registered agent. It finds a company by entity name, entity number, principal or registered agent. Use it to confirm a company exists and is active, not to get its federal number.

On a Utah W-2 there are two numbers. The State Tax Commission describes the Utah withholding account number as 14 digits ending in WTH, and it is separate from the federal EIN.

The Utah entity number

The Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code gives every company an entity number when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if a Utah LLC is active

Search the company in the Utah business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Existence from the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Utah

  • Utah calls its yearly state filing a renewal, not an annual report, and it falls due on the anniversary of formation. Owners searching for the Utah annual report form do not find one, because it does not exist under that name.
  • The Division of Corporations issues an entity number that identifies the company in Utah records. It is a state index and not a tax ID; the Tax Commission uses the federal EIN and its own account numbers.
  • Utah calls withholding registration a Withholding Tax license, and anyone paying Utah wages to Utah employees must have one. Returns are filed online on form TC-941E through TAP with both the FEIN and the withholding account ID on each, and an annual reconciliation is due for every year the account is open, even a year with no employees.
