What the Texas business search shows

The Texas Comptroller Franchise Tax Account Status search finds a company by 11-digit taxpayer number, 9-digit federal EIN, entity name or Secretary of State file number. Enter the nine digits in the taxpayer number box and it reports the company's right to transact business in Texas. Texas taxpayer numbers can also point to the EIN: the Comptroller's glossary says an EIN may serve as the base of an 11-digit number prefixed with a 1.

Texas publishes taxpayer numbers by company name in its Active Franchise Tax Permit Holders open data. A number starting with 1 may contain the EIN as its next nine digits. Most Texas numbers start with 3 instead, and those should not be read as containing an EIN. Treat a number worked out this way as a lead and confirm it with the company.

The Secretary of State's own business search moved from SOSDirect to SOSPortal on September 29, 2026. It covers formation records, and the Comptroller's search is the one built around tax numbers.

The Texas filing number

The Texas Secretary of State gives every company a filing number when it is formed, such as 0806770615. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN. Our own records show about 20,056 new Texas LLCs in the 30 days to August 29, 2026.

Check if a Texas LLC is active

Search the company in the Texas business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Fact from the Texas Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Texas

  • Texas is a community property state. A Texas LLC owned only by a married couple can elect to be treated as a disregarded entity rather than a partnership, which changes the tax classification you put on the SS-4 and removes an annual 1065 filing. In a non-community-property state the same two-member LLC has no such choice.
  • Texas has no personal income tax but does have a franchise tax, so the state relationship a Texas LLC has after getting its EIN is with the Comptroller rather than an income tax agency.
  • The Secretary of State issues a ten-digit filing number with leading zeros. It identifies the company in Texas records only and has no relationship to the federal EIN.

Questions

How do I search for a business in Texas?

Use the Texas Comptroller Franchise Tax Account Status search, which finds a company by 11-digit taxpayer number, 9-digit federal EIN, entity name or Secretary of State file number. Search by the main words of the name, without LLC or Inc, so small differences do not hide the company.

Does the Texas business search show a company's EIN?

Generally not. The EIN comes from the IRS, and Texas's business records are kept for the state's own purposes. A Form W-9 from the company is the reliable way to get it.

How do I check if a Texas LLC is active?

Search the company by name and open its record. The status shows whether Texas counts it as active. Words like dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, often because an annual filing or fee was missed.

How do I get proof that a Texas company is in good standing?

Order a Certificate of Fact from the Texas Secretary of State. Banks, lenders and other states ask for it as proof the company exists and is current.

What is a Texas filing number?

It is the number the Texas Secretary of State gives a company when it is formed, and it identifies the company in state records. It is not the company's EIN, which comes from the IRS.
