Look up a North Dakota company

This is North Dakota’s own search, loaded from the state’s website. Any security check it shows comes from the state. It finds the company, not usually its EIN. Open it in a new tab.

What the North Dakota business search shows

The North Dakota Secretary of State keeps North Dakota’s record of companies formed or registered there. Use it to confirm a company’s exact legal name and whether it is active.

The North Dakota SOS control ID

The North Dakota Secretary of State gives every company an SOS control ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if a North Dakota LLC is active

Search the company in the North Dakota business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a certificate of good standing from the North Dakota Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in North Dakota

  • North Dakota's corporate farming law bars LLCs from owning or leasing farmland or ranchland and from farming or ranching, unless the company qualifies as a farming or ranching LLC (a limited number of members, all related to one another within set degrees of kinship, with members actively operating the farm) or as an authorized livestock farm LLC. An ordinary business LLC cannot hold farmland.
  • Workers' compensation in North Dakota is sold only by the state. Workforce Safety & Insurance is an exclusive state fund and North Dakota law does not allow private insurers to underwrite workers' compensation, so an LLC that hires buys its coverage from WSI, not from an insurance agent.
  • A North Dakota LLC that misses its November 15 annual report is placed in Not Good Standing, and it is involuntarily terminated if the report stays unfiled. The Secretary of State sends annual report and Not Good Standing notices to the registered agent's address on the business record.
