Look up a Michigan company
Michigan only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.
What the Michigan business search shows
The LARA Corporations Division business entity search finds a company by entity name, individual name, ID number or filing number. LARA's own Michigan Business Roadmap says EINs should not be provided to the Corporations Division, and the ID number it assigns is not a federal tax number.
Michigan Treasury works the other way round: its forms use the nine-digit FEIN, or a Treasury-issued TR number, as the Business Account Number. So your own Treasury paperwork is a good place to find your EIN, even though LARA's records are not.
The Michigan customer ID number
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Corporations Division gives every company a customer ID number when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.
Check if a Michigan LLC is active
Search the company in the Michigan business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.
To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Good Standing from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Corporations Division. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.
Good to know in Michigan
- Michigan does not run business filings through its Secretary of State. They sit with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, which is why searches for a Michigan Secretary of State business lookup lead to the wrong agency and why the paperwork arrives under a name owners do not recognise.
- Michigan sets one fixed annual statement date in February for every LLC rather than an anniversary date, so a company formed in December files its first statement within weeks of forming.
- LARA issues a customer ID number for the entity, which is the number Michigan uses to index the company. It is not a tax ID and Treasury will still ask for the federal EIN separately.

How do I search for a business in Michigan?
Use the LARA Corporations Division business entity search, which finds a company by entity name, individual name, ID number or filing number. Search by the main words of the name, without LLC or Inc, so small differences do not hide the company.
Does the Michigan business search show a company's EIN?
Generally not. The EIN comes from the IRS, and Michigan's business records are kept for the state's own purposes. A Form W-9 from the company is the reliable way to get it.
