Look up a Maine company

Search Maine records

Maine only allows its search on its own site, so this opens in a new tab. It finds the company, not usually its EIN.

What the Maine business search shows

The Maine Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions keeps Maine’s record of companies formed or registered there. Use it to confirm a company’s exact legal name and whether it is active.

The Maine charter number

The Maine Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions gives every company a charter number when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.

Check if a Maine LLC is active

Search the company in the Maine business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Existence from the Maine Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Maine

  • Maine's charter number ends in letters that show the entity type, and a domestic Maine LLC's ends in DC. The corporate name search and the annual report are keyed to that charter number; the EIN comes into play at Maine Revenue Services, which requires it to open the LLC's tax accounts.
  • Every Maine LLC's annual report is due June 1, whatever month the company was formed. A report received after June 1 draws a late filing penalty, and the Secretary of State administratively dissolves an LLC that does not pay that penalty.
  • Maine Revenue Services issues the Resale Certificate itself, and only to registered retailers that qualify, separately from the Retailer Certificate that shows the sales tax registration number. A Maine retailer without one pays sales tax to its vendors on goods bought for resale and takes a credit for that tax on its next sales tax return.
