What the Florida business search shows

The Sunbiz record search finds a company by name, officer or registered agent, document number, ZIP code, street address or FEI/EIN. Florida is the exception: Sunbiz records have an FEI/EIN Number field, and you can search by that number. The field shows what the company reported, so it can read NONE or APPLIED FOR on a company that has an EIN.

More than one company can appear under a single number, because the field is self-reported and related companies often share one. Read the name on each result before relying on it.

Florida's annual report asks for the number, which is how it reaches the record. See the full guide to Sunbiz EIN lookups for what each value means and how to add yours.

The Florida document number

The Florida Division of Corporations (Sunbiz) gives every company a document number when it is formed, such as L26000449593. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN. Our own records show about 55,615 new Florida LLCs in the 30 days to August 29, 2026.

Check if a Florida LLC is active

Search the company in the Florida business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.

To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Status from the Florida Division of Corporations (Sunbiz). Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.

Good to know in Florida

  • Florida LLC document numbers begin with the letter L followed by the filing year. An LLC formed in 2026 carries an L26 prefix. That is the number Sunbiz indexes your company by, and it is not your EIN.
  • Florida has no personal state income tax, so the tax classification you choose on the SS-4 only affects your federal return. In most states it drives a state filing too.
  • Sunbiz publishes new filings publicly and almost immediately, which is why Florida LLC owners typically start receiving mail and texts about EINs within days of forming.
  • Florida's annual report is filed on Sunbiz between January 1 and May 1 each year, starting the calendar year after formation, and the login is the document number rather than the EIN. Filing after May 1 adds a statutory late fee and a company that never files is administratively dissolved in the fall.
  • Florida's state tax registration is the Florida Business Tax Application, Form DR-1, with the Department of Revenue. It opens sales and use tax and reemployment tax in one filing, asks for both the federal EIN and the Sunbiz document number, and is required from the first taxable sale or the first payroll.

Questions

How do I search for a business in Florida?

What is a Florida document number?

It is the number the Florida Division of Corporations (Sunbiz) gives a company when it is formed, and it identifies the company in state records. It is not the company's EIN, which comes from the IRS.
