What the Connecticut business search shows
The Connecticut Business Records Search finds a company by business name, business ALEI or filing number. The state describes a record as the business name, business ID, principal, agent, date formed, entity type and address, with no EIN among them.
Connecticut's business ID is the ALEI, which the state's open data expands as Authoritative Legal Entity Identifier. It is a state index, not a tax number.
The Connecticut business ID
The Connecticut Secretary of the State gives every company a business ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.
Check if a Connecticut LLC is active
Search the company in the Connecticut business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.
To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Legal Existence from the Connecticut Secretary of the State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.
Good to know in Connecticut
- Connecticut's annual report window is fixed for every LLC regardless of formation date: January 1 to March 31. Most states tie the due date to the formation anniversary, so an LLC formed in Connecticut in December owes its first report within about three months of existing.
- Connecticut's pass-through entity tax was mandatory for LLCs taxed as partnerships or S corporations from 2018 through 2023 and became elective for tax years beginning in 2024. Whether to elect it is now a yearly decision that depends on the members' own returns, and it is made with the entity return rather than on the SS-4.
- business.ct.gov puts the Secretary of the State filing, the Department of Revenue Services registration and the Department of Labor employer registration behind one login, which is why Connecticut owners usually finish state setup in a single session once the EIN exists.

How do I search for a business in Connecticut?
Use the Connecticut Business Records Search, which finds a company by business name, business ALEI or filing number. Search by the main words of the name, without LLC or Inc, so small differences do not hide the company.
Does the Connecticut business search show a company's EIN?
Generally not. The EIN comes from the IRS, and Connecticut's business records are kept for the state's own purposes. A Form W-9 from the company is the reliable way to get it.
