What the Colorado business search shows
The Colorado Secretary of State business database finds a company by business name, trade name, trademark, ID number or document number. The Secretary of State's FAQ lists what a record contains, with no tax ID, says the entity ID is not the same as your tax ID number, and sends readers to the IRS and the Department of Revenue.
Colorado's Department of Revenue issues its own Colorado Account Number, or CAN, which is different from the EIN. It appears on the sales tax license as the first eight digits of the Use Account Number.
The Colorado Colorado entity ID
The Colorado Secretary of State gives every company a Colorado entity ID when it is formed. It identifies the company in state records, and it is not the company’s EIN.
Check if a Colorado LLC is active
Search the company in the Colorado business search and open its record. The status tells you whether the state counts the company as active. Words such as dissolved, revoked, forfeited, inactive or delinquent mean it is not in good standing, usually because an annual filing or fee was missed, and the company may need to be reinstated before it can do business there.
To prove a company is in good standing to a bank, a lender or another state, order a Certificate of Good Standing from the Colorado Secretary of State. Our LLC status check reads the status from public data where a state publishes it.
Good to know in Colorado
- Colorado business filings are online only. There is no paper Articles of Organization to mail, which is unusual, and it means the state record exists the moment the filing is accepted rather than after a clerk processes it.
- Colorado calls its yearly filing a Periodic Report and opens a window around the anniversary month for it rather than fixing one statewide date. Missing the window puts the company into noncompliant status, which is a state problem the EIN does not touch.
- The Secretary of State issues an eleven-digit Colorado entity ID that begins with the filing year. It is how the state indexes the company and it is not a tax number of any kind.
