How to Apply for an EIN in Alaska

Last updated September 22, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

The EIN application is federal and identical in every state. There is no Alaska EIN, no Alaska form, and no Alaska office involved: you file IRS Form SS-4 and the IRS issues the number. What is genuinely different in Alaska is what happens on either side of it — the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing filing that has to exist first, and the state registrations that need the EIN once you have it.

Get the EIN for your Alaska business

Pick your entity type and we take it from there: our specialists prepare the SS-4 with the name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, file it, and email you the EIN, typically within 2 to 4 business days (7 to 10 if it has to go by fax).

The EIN step itself

One federal form, one agency, the same options wherever the business sits: online, fax, mail, or the international phone line. The method decides the timeline, not the state. Every method and what it actually takes covers that in full, and it applies to Alaska unchanged.

What Alaska needs first

Form your entity with the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing before applying. The IRS asks for the legal name and formation date exactly as the state recorded them, and a mismatch is one of the common causes of a rejected application.

Alaska assigns its own entity number. It identifies your company in state records and is not a tax ID. It cannot be used where an EIN is asked for, and the IRS has no record of it.

What Alaska requires once you have the EIN

  • Get an Alaska Business License from the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. State law requires one for the privilege of engaging in business in Alaska, the application asks for the LLC's Alaska Entity Number, and the license expires on December 31 at the end of the one-year or two-year period purchased.
  • If the LLC will employ anyone, even for part of a day, file the Alaska Employer Registration with the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The Division's own EIN guidance lists this as the step that follows getting the EIN.
  • File the biennial report with the Division by January 2 every other year: in even-numbered years for an LLC formed in an even-numbered year, and in odd-numbered years for one formed in an odd-numbered year. Filing opens on October 2 of the year before.

What is actually different about Alaska

  • Alaska does not levy a state sales tax, so there is no state sales tax account to open. Many cities and boroughs levy their own sales tax, and a business files those returns on forms from the municipality where it did business, not from the state; remote sellers may instead need to register with the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission.
  • The Division issues three numbers that are easy to confuse with the EIN: the Alaska Entity Number for the LLC itself, the Alaska Business License Number, and professional license numbers. The business license application asks for the Entity Number, and the Division states plainly that it does not issue EINs.
  • A new Alaska LLC may owe an Initial Report within six months of formation, a separate filing from the biennial report that adds the company's owners or officers to the state record. Only domestic corporations and LLCs file it; a foreign LLC registered to do business in Alaska does not.
