How to Get or Find Your FEIN Number

Last updated November 5, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

FEIN is another name for an EIN, and only the IRS issues it. If you have never had one, you apply on Form SS-4. If you have had one, do not apply again. Find it on your IRS letter, a filed federal return or your bank records, or call the IRS.

Never had a FEIN? We prepare and file the application and email you the number.

If you have never had one

Apply with the IRS once the business exists. Online answers in the same session when the IRS accepts it, and fax takes about 11 business days. See how to apply for an EIN, or how to get one for an LLC.

If you had one and cannot find it

  • The CP 575 letter the IRS sent, or the PDF from your online application.
  • A filed federal return for the business.
  • Your bank, if you opened the account with the number.
  • State registrations and payroll records.
  • The IRS, at 1-800-829-4933. An authorized person can ask for it. See how to get a 147C letter.

If you need another company’s FEIN

Ask for a Form W-9. Our free EIN lookup searches the public records where these numbers appear, and how to find a company’s EIN covers the rest.

Quick answers

Is a FEIN different from an EIN?

No. FEIN stands for federal employer identification number. It is the same IRS number, and there is no separate application.

How do I look up my FEIN online?

The IRS has no online lookup. Check your IRS letter, a filed return or your bank, or call the IRS.

Can I get a letter that shows my FEIN?

Yes. If you lost the original CP 575, an authorized person can ask the IRS for a 147C letter.

Does a state issue a FEIN?

No. Only the IRS issues it. A state issues its own, separate numbers.
