How to Get My EIN Number

Last updated November 5, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

It depends on whether a number already exists. If you had one, it is on your IRS letter, tax returns or bank records, or the IRS can confirm it by phone. If you applied, it arrives by the route you used. If you never had one, you apply for one. Do not apply again until you know, because that can leave you with two.

Never had an EIN? We prepare and file your application and email you the number.

If you had one and lost it

  1. Check your CP 575 letter, or the PDF you saved if you applied online.
  2. Check a filed federal return for the business.
  3. Ask your bank, accountant or payroll provider. Anyone who has dealt with your business taxes may have it.
  4. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-4933. An authorized person can ask for the number and a 147C letter to confirm it.

For an LLC, how to find your LLC’s EIN has more places to check.

If you applied and are waiting

How you appliedWhen to expect it
OnlineIn the same session, on the confirmation screen
FaxAbout 11 business days, sometimes longer
MailAbout 4 weeks

Checking your EIN application status explains what to do if that time has passed. If you have the number but it does not work yet, see new EIN not active yet.

If you never had one

You apply on Form SS-4. How to apply for an EIN covers the checks and steps, and how to get an EIN for an LLC covers LLCs.

If you need someone else’s number

The IRS will not give out another business’s EIN. Ask them for a Form W-9, or try our free EIN lookup, which searches the public records where EINs appear.

Quick answers

Can I get my EIN number online?

Only if you are applying for a new one. The IRS has no online way to look up a number already issued, so a lost EIN means checking your records or calling.

Can the IRS give me my EIN over the phone?

Yes, once they confirm you are an authorized person for the business, such as the responsible party or an officer.

Who can call the IRS for my EIN?

An authorized person for the business, such as a sole proprietor, a partner, a corporate officer or a trust's fiduciary.

Is a 147C letter the same as a CP 575?

No. The CP 575 is issued once when the EIN is assigned. The 147C is the replacement letter that confirms the number later.
