LLC EIN Number: How to Find It or Get One

Last updated November 5, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

An LLC’s EIN number is the nine-digit number the IRS assigns it, written like 12-3456789. It is not the number on your state approval. If you applied, it is on your IRS letter. If nobody applied, the LLC does not have one yet, and you get it by applying with the IRS.

Where to find your LLC’s EIN

  • The CP 575 letter from the IRS, or the PDF saved when you applied online.
  • A filed federal return for the LLC.
  • Your bank, if the business account was opened with it.
  • Your formation company’s account, if it applied for you.
  • Payroll records, W-9s or state tax registrations.

If none of those has it, the responsible party can call the IRS at 1-800-829-4933 and ask for a 147C letter. For a step-by-step version, see how to find your LLC’s EIN.

If the LLC never got one

Apply in the LLC’s exact legal name. How to get an EIN for an LLC covers each situation. Check the places above first, because applying again when a number exists leaves the LLC with two.

Looking up another company’s number

The IRS has no public EIN search. Our free EIN lookup searches the public records where EINs appear. For a company you are paying, the normal route is to ask for a Form W-9.

Quick answers

Is my LLC number the same as my EIN?

No. The LLC number comes from the state when the LLC is formed. The EIN comes from the IRS, and you have to apply for it.

Does every LLC automatically get an EIN?

No. Forming an LLC with the state does not create one, unless your formation company applied for you.

Can I look up my LLC's EIN online?

Not at the IRS, which has no public search. Some public records show EINs, and our free EIN lookup searches those.

Can an LLC have more than one EIN?

Normally one. A second number usually comes from a duplicate application or a change of structure.
