IRS EIN Reference Number 114: One EIN Per Day

Last updated September 3, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

Reference number 114 means the IRS has already issued an EIN to this responsible party today. The IRS limits online applications to one EIN per responsible party per day. In most cases this is your own earlier attempt: the application reached the confirmation page and the number was issued, even if the page did not display, print, or open in a blocked pop-up. Do not apply again tomorrow; you would get a second EIN for the same entity. Recover the one you have with a 147C letter.

Not sure whether you already have a number? We can check the situation with you before anything is filed, so you end up with one EIN, not two.

Why the limit exists

The one-per-day rule stops automated bulk creation of EINs and stops accidental duplicates when someone retries a form that already succeeded. It applies per responsible party, not per business. A founder forming two LLCs on the same day can get one EIN online and has to wait until the next day, or fax, for the second.

What 114 usually means

The applicant tried once, something went wrong on the confirmation page, they tried again, and got a 114. The first attempt worked. The common ways the first confirmation gets lost:

  • The confirmation opened in a pop-up that a blocker suppressed.
  • The tab was closed or the back button pressed before the number was written down.
  • The page rendered a blank or partial notice and the applicant assumed it had failed.
  • Someone else in the business applied the same day without telling you.

What to do

1. Look for the confirmation

Check downloads, the browser’s history for a page titled with the EIN confirmation, and any email address you entered. The online tool offers the CP 575 as a PDF at the end.

2. Request a 147C letter

The responsible party calls the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, confirms their identity and authority, and asks for an EIN verification letter. The agent can read the number on the call and mail or fax the 147C. Banks accept it in place of the CP 575. The 147C call, step by step.

3. Do not apply again

A second application the next day will succeed, and you will have two EINs for one entity, 1099s arriving under both, and a letter to write to close one of them. The 147C is faster than that.

When 114 is not your own attempt

If you are certain nobody applied today, the responsible party’s number may be in use on another application, such as a second business formed the same day or a preparer who submitted on your behalf without saying so. The 147C call resolves this too; the agent can tell you what was issued under your number today.

Quick answers

Does the limit reset at midnight?

It resets by the next business day. But if the earlier attempt succeeded, applying again creates a duplicate, so check first.

Can I fax an SS-4 to get around the limit?

Fax is not subject to the online limit, but the same duplicate risk applies. Use fax for a genuine second entity, not to retry the first.

Does 114 mean my business name was accepted?

If the earlier attempt issued an EIN, yes: the number is assigned to the name you entered. A name conflict would have returned a 101 instead.
