IRS EIN Online Application Not Working? Every Cause and Fix

Done fighting the IRS website? We prepare the SS-4, file it by the route that will actually complete, handle any reference number, and email you the EIN.

1. It is closed
The online application is not available around the clock. It runs on a weekday schedule in Eastern time and is offline overnight, at weekends, and during maintenance. Outside those hours the page loads but the application will not start, or it stops with a generic message. The current hours are on the IRS page in the sources below. This is the single most common reason it is “not working” and it is not a fault.
2. The session timed out
The application cannot be saved and has a short inactivity timeout. If you stop to look up a formation date, find a trust document, or phone someone for their SSN, it expires and you start from the beginning. The fix is preparation: have the legal name exactly as the state recorded it, the formation date, the responsible party’s name and SSN or ITIN, the address, and the reason for applying written down before you open the page, then go straight through.
3. The browser broke the session
- The back button. Using it drops the session. Use the application’s own navigation only.
- A second tab or window with the application open. Close everything and start once, in one tab.
- Pop-up blockers and privacy extensions. The final confirmation opens in a way some blockers suppress, so the application appears to finish with nothing to show. Turn them off for the IRS site before you begin.
- A dropped connection on a phone or laptop moving between networks. Use a stable connection and finish in one sitting.
4. The responsible party does not qualify for the online tool
The online application is for applicants whose principal business is in the United States and whose responsible party has a U.S. taxpayer identification number. If the responsible party has neither an SSN nor an ITIN, the website cannot process the application, however many times you try. That is not a fault either; the route for those applicants is fax, mail, or the international phone line. How to get an EIN without an SSN covers it.
5. It ended in a reference number
If the application ran to the end and gave you a number with a message to contact the IRS, that is not a crash. It is the application telling you why it stopped. Each number has its own page.
| Number | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 101 | Business name conflict in IRS records | Call the IRS or fax the SS-4. Do not rename. |
| 102 / 103 | Responsible party name and SSN or ITIN do not match IRS records | Check exact legal spelling, retry once |
| 105 | Too many attempts; locked out | Stop for the day, or fax |
| 109 / 110 / 112 / 113 | IRS technical error, nothing issued | Wait, retry once, then fax |
| 114 | An EIN was already issued to this responsible party today | Your earlier attempt probably succeeded; get a 147C |
6. You already have the EIN and did not realise
If a previous attempt reached the confirmation page, the IRS issued the number then, even if the page did not print or the pop-up was blocked. A 114 on the next attempt is the giveaway. The number is retrievable with a 147C letter; this guide explains how. Do not apply again.
The method that does not depend on the website
Form SS-4 by fax has no hours, no timeout, no browser, and no attempt counter. A person processes it. Include a return fax number and the EIN comes back in roughly four business days; leave it off and it comes by mail in weeks. For an applicant who has already lost a day to the website, fax is usually the faster route from here, and it is the only route for a name conflict or an applicant with no U.S. taxpayer number. All four methods and their real timelines sets them side by side.
Quick answers
Is the IRS EIN website down right now?
Check the hours first. Most “down” reports are the overnight and weekend closure. If it is inside the hours and the application fails at submit with a 109, it is genuinely degraded; wait an hour rather than retrying.
Can I apply for an EIN on my phone?
The site works on a phone, but the timeout and the connection drops make it the least reliable way. A laptop on a wired or stable connection, in one sitting, is the setup that finishes.
Why will it not accept my business name?
Usually a 101, which is a conflict with a similar name elsewhere in the country, not a formatting problem. Do not change the name to get past it; the 101 guide explains why and what to do instead.
