Can You Get an EIN the Same Day?

Last updated September 3, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

Yes, on a weekday during IRS hours, if the online application completes. It issues the EIN in the same session. Three things stop it: the tool is closed, which means evenings, weekends and holidays; the responsible party has no U.S. taxpayer number; or the application ends in a reference number instead of an EIN. When any of those happens, the realistic timeline is fax at roughly four business days, and that is where we take over: prepared and filed by the route that will complete, the IRS handled if it pushes back, and the number emailed to you, typically within two to four business days.

What same day actually requires

It has to be open

The online EIN application runs on a weekday schedule in Eastern time. It is closed overnight, closed at weekends, and closed on federal holidays and during maintenance. The current hours are on the IRS page in the sources below. If you are reading this on a Saturday, the earliest an EIN can be issued is Monday morning, by any method.

You have to be eligible for the online tool

The responsible party needs a valid SSN or ITIN, and the business’s principal location has to be in the United States. Applicants outside the country use the international phone line, which can also issue a number on the call but has its own hours and holds. Applicants with no U.S. taxpayer number use fax or mail, which are never same day. EIN without an SSN.

It has to complete

The application is one sitting with a short timeout, and it can end in a reference number instead of an EIN. A 101 name conflict cannot be fixed online and moves you to the phone or fax queue. A technical 109 may clear on a later retry the same day, or may not.

Making the same-day attempt count

  • Have every answer ready before you open the page: legal name exactly as the state approved it, formation date, entity type and classification, responsible party’s name and SSN or ITIN, address, and reason for applying.
  • Go early in the day. The system degrades under load, and a failed submission late in the afternoon leaves no time to retry.
  • One browser tab, no back button, pop-up blockers off. The confirmation page is the only place the number appears; save it as a PDF before you close anything.
  • Do not resubmit on a failure. Repeated attempts trigger a 105 lockout that costs a full day.

When same day is off the table

If the online tool is closed, will not accept you, or has returned a reference number, the fastest remaining route is fax with a return fax number: roughly four business days. That is the route we use for applicants the website cannot serve, and the value is in getting it right the first time: a faxed SS-4 with a wrong box or a missing signature bounces and costs another week. Be wary of anyone advertising same-day EINs for foreign applicants or for 101 conflicts; the IRS has no such route.

The honest timeline for every method sets them side by side.

Quick answers

Can I get an EIN on a Saturday or Sunday?

No. The online tool is closed and nothing else is processed at weekends. You can prepare, or submit to a service, so that filing happens first thing Monday.

Is a third-party service faster than the IRS website?

Not when the website works for you and you have every answer ready. A service earns its fee when the website will not complete, when the responsible party has no SSN, when a reference number has already cost you a day, or when getting the entity type right matters more than the next hour.

Can the bank wait for the EIN?

Most will hold an application open for a few days. Ask; it is common.
