Sunbiz EIN: How to Look Up, Add or Get One

Last updated November 5, 2026 · Written by the EIN Registration filing team

Sunbiz does not issue EINs. The IRS does. Sunbiz is where Florida keeps its company records, and those records have an FEI/EIN Number field showing whatever the company reported on its annual report. You can read that field on a company’s record or search by the number, but a blank or APPLIED FOR does not tell you whether the IRS has actually issued one.

Need an EIN for your Florida business?

We file the SS-4 for you. EIN typically emailed in 2 to 4 business days (about 11 by fax).

How to look up an EIN on Sunbiz

There are two routes, depending on what you already have.

You have the company name

  1. Open the Sunbiz record search and search by name.
  2. Click the exact company in the results.
  3. Read the Filing Information block near the top of the record. It lists the Document Number, then the FEI/EIN Number.

You have the number

Use search by FEI/EIN, and enter the nine digits. The results are a list in number order, so they can run on past your number into other companies. Check that the number on the row matches what you typed. One number can also appear on several companies, since each company reports its own, so read the name before you rely on it. Fictitious names and partnerships have their own FEI/EIN searches on the same page.

What the FEI/EIN field means

The record showsWhat you can take from it
A nine-digit numberThe number the company reported. It is not checked against the IRS here, so confirm it with the company if it matters.
APPLIED FORSunbiz says its records indicate the number was previously applied for. The next annual report cannot say APPLIED FOR again, so the number has to be entered then.
NONE or blankNo number on file with the state. That does not mean the company has no EIN. Many formed recently have not filed an annual report yet, and the state does not need one to form the company.

How to add or change your EIN on Sunbiz

Florida does not require an EIN to form an LLC, so the field often starts empty. The annual report is where it gets filled in: Florida law requires the report to give the company’s federal employer identification number or, if it has none, say whether one has been applied for.

  • On the annual report. Use the Edit FEI/EIN Number block. Enter digits only, with no dash. If the field is blank, Sunbiz says you must enter the number or tick APPLIED FOR or NOT APPLICABLE.
  • After you have already filed. Corporations and LLCs can file an amended annual report.
  • Outside the annual report. The Division of Corporations lists update forms on its update your information page.

Updating Sunbiz changes the Division of Corporations’ record only. The Florida Department of Revenue and your bank keep their own records.

How to get an EIN for a Florida LLC

Wait until Sunbiz has approved the filing, then apply with the IRS on Form SS-4 using the name exactly as Sunbiz recorded it. The application does not go through Sunbiz. Our Florida EIN guide covers the state registrations that come after it, and the Florida EIN lookup covers Florida’s other numbers.

Quick answers

Is my Sunbiz document number my EIN?

No. The document number, such as L26000449593, is how Sunbiz indexes your company. The EIN is a nine-digit federal number in the format 12-3456789.

Can Sunbiz tell me my EIN if I lost it?

Only if your company reported it. If the field does not have it, check your CP 575 letter or ask the IRS for a 147C letter. Sunbiz’s own help page sends people to the IRS at 800-829-4933.

Will my EIN be public if I add it?

Yes. Whatever goes in that field shows on your public Sunbiz record, and anyone can search by it.
